Welcome, Magritte Gordaneer, New NWA Staffer! March 20, 2024
Join us in welcoming Ms. Magritte Gordaneer as PSR National’s new Lead Organizer and Policy Coordinator of the Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program.
Magritte is a UN Youth Champion for Disarmament, having been selected as one of fifteen individuals out of over 1000 applicants from 128 countries.
Magritte has worked in the field of disarmament for the past six years, largely focusing on advocating for nuclear abolition. She first learned about nuclear weapons and the humanitarian threats they pose as a high school student through the work of the late Dr. Mary-Wynne Ashford. In 2019, she traveled to Hiroshima to learn from hibakusha and academics as part of the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy.
Magritte comes to PSR with both national and international organizing experience in advocating against nuclear weapons. She has served as Program Coordinator of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Canada and interned with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) as well as the Arms Control Association/Forum on the Arms Trade. Most recently, she contributed to youth and disarmament organizing resources as a consultant with Mines Action Canada.
Magritte received her BA with First-Class Honors from McGill University, where she majored in political science and dual-minored in history and gender, sexuality, feminist, and social justice studies. At university, she also co-founded a peace and disarmament group on campus focusing on decoupling academic research from military objectives and contracts.
