Utility bills are increasing across the country September 25, 2025

Has your electric bill gone up in recent months? On his first day in office, Trump declared a National Energy Emergency and then proceeded with policies that have increased costs, worsened reliability, and harmed our climate. We’ve seen renewable energy projects canceled and misguided attempts to keep inefficient coal plants online instead. Over ¾ of US states are seeing an increase in electricity and methane prices that are often immediately passed onto the consumer, resulting in higher bills for all of us. This burden is most obvious for low-wealth individuals and families because a higher percentage of their earnings must now be spent on keeping the lights on. This is just one factor of our current cost of living crisis – but it’s one that threatens to undermine our efforts to further residential electrification.

Recognizing this injustice and threat, PSR’s Environment and Health team is taking action to protect consumers and our planet. First, we are working with our chapters to make sure electric utilities don’t use this spike in demand as an excuse to bring more fossil fuels online. Second, we are working with partners, like Action in Montgomery (AIM), to advance low-cost solutions like networked geothermal. Lastly, we are partnering with other organizations in the Just Solutions Collective to call for utility justice now!
