The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has been a valuable mechanism for public participation since 1970. This law requires the federal government to inform community members of the potential environmental impacts of a project and get feedback from the people on the frontlines. Since its inception, this tool has been utilized by  environmental justice communities to organize and protect themselves.

Now, the Trump administration is once again attempting to dismantle NEPA to give developers and polluters even more power. Without overarching policy on how to implement NEPA, projects can more readily move forward without community input and put health at risk.

Under the previous Trump administration, NEPA was stripped of many of its best qualities in an effort to expedite development. We know well that these changes did not impact all people equally. Rather, they fell hardest on low-income communities and people of color, who continue to be disproportionately burdened by environmental impacts and the poor health outcomes associated with them.

We cannot let the federal government move backwards on environmental justice and leave whole communities behind. Comments are due Thursday, March 27, so please submit yours and share this action with your network ASAP!
