Urge your U.S. Representative to help reduce the risk of nuclear war March 9, 2023
With a war raging in Ukraine, threats and counter-threats between the U.S. and China, and the Biden administration asking Congress to fund a record-breaking military budget, it could not be more clear that we need a major course correction. We need to point decision-makers toward a safer and more healthy direction. U.S. Representatives Jim McGovern and Earl Blumenauer are showing the way. Please ask your U.S. Representative to cosponsor H. Res. 77, which the two Congressmen re-introduced on January 31 of this year.
This bill is endorsed by 153 organizations including PSR and seven PSR chapters. It calls on the U.S. government to take common sense steps toward total worldwide elimination of nuclear weapons, including all five of the policy recommendations advocated by the Back from the Brink coalition (PSR is a Coalition Partner). McGovern and Blumenauer updated the legislation from last session to reflect some current realities, including that it is vitally important for the U.S. and Russia to resume verification procedures under the existing New START Treaty and negotiate a follow-on agreement before New START expires in 2026.
The 92 nations that have signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons are also pointing the world in a sensible and sober direction. Anyone who understands nuclear weapons understands why they have been declared illegal. That’s why H. Res. 77 also calls upon United States leaders to embrace the goals and provisions of the TPNW.
If you agree that the United States and all nuclear-armed countries must swiftly change direction, then please ask your U.S. Representative to represent YOU by co-sponsoring H. Res. 77. Thank you!
