The legacy of weapons testing and the fight for Nevada’s Cold War veterans January 20, 2026

Magritte Gordaneer, PSR Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program Manager | Nevada Current
Nevada’s deserts played a pivotal role in America’s rise as a nuclear superpower. The Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site) hosted over 900 nuclear weapons tests between the 1950s and 1990s. But relentless Cold War testing came at a tremendous cost. Many Nevadans and other Americans in “downwinder” communities were exposed to radioactive fallout and later developed serious illnesses like cancer.
These diagnoses continue to this day; a reminder for us all that the price of our security is still being paid.
