Tell President Biden there’s still time to achieve climate progress! December 11, 2024

The Department of Energy (DOE) has been working diligently on an analysis of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and whether they are in the best interest of Americans. While we await this report, there is action that President Biden can take to protect communities at home and abroad from the health harms of fossil fuels and climate change.

With Inauguration Day around the corner, we need to tell President Biden to take action now. Earlier this year, he paused development of new LNG facilities; rejecting the remaining pending permits would protect our health and climate considerably.

Thank you for contributing to the climate progress made over the course of this administration. We look forward to making strides with you in the new year!

Inauguration day is Monday, January 20, 2025, so please write to President Biden before this date!

My name [and health credentials if relevant] is _____, and I urge you to reject all pending permits for liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in order to protect health and cement your administration’s progress on climate change.

[Add a personal note about why you care about transitioning away from fossil fuels like LNG and curbing the impacts of climate change.]

[Include some or all of the following points:]

  • LNG terminals emit harmful air pollutants such as PM 2.5, benzene, and methane.
  • Export facilities are often located in already overburdened communities, worsening environmental injustices and compounding negative health impacts on people of color and low income individuals.
  • These projects contribute to climate change by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, which is already causing more frequent and severe natural disasters, displacement of communities, and more.
  • LNG produces poor outcome for environment and health across its lifecycle
    • Fracking for methane endangers nearby communities through worsened air quality and water contamination.
    • People living near LNG sites have experienced higher incidence rates of cancer and respiratory disease.
    • Transport of LNG can lead to  methane leaks or explosions, risking both health and safety.
    • LNG that is exported harms receiving areas that will experience increased air pollution.
    • The entire globe is eventually impacted by LNG through its lifecycle-spanning greenhouse gas emissions that worsen climate change around the world.
  • Hundreds of thousands of Americans including frontline community leaders and health professionals have urged your Administration to stop unchecked expansion of LNG.
  • LNG exports are not in the public interest and DOE’s forthcoming report will undoubtedly confirm this.

Thank you for all that your administration has done to curb emissions and protect health already. Pausing LNG authorizations earlier this year was a much needed first step, now it is time to work with DOE to stop LNG in its tracks. The health of the American people must come before Big Oil profits.
