If we want to increase the number of renewable energy projects, get them hooked up to the grid, and end our reliance on fossil fuels, we need to reform our process of evaluation and permitting. Generally, the goal of permitting reform is to make the process of siting and developing new energy projects more expeditious. In our view, we should be simplifying these steps for renewable energy sources, not fossil fuels that for decades have received priority at the expense of frontline communities.
While there is room for nuance and bipartisanship in developing permitting reform legislation, the SPEED Act is a massive step in the wrong direction. This bill deprioritizes community engagement, public health concerns, scientific rigor, agency oversight, and the longstanding application of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The passage of this bill would guarantee more fossil fuel dependence, more pollution, and the normalization of deregulation led by the federal government itself.
Our communities are not sacrifice zones for fossil fuel corporations. We can achieve a just transition to renewable energy with active public participation and sound environmental review. PSR is working to draft a policy position and model legislation for what we would like to see in a permitting reform bill that puts health first. Share your input here for what you would like to see in such a policy!
