Tell Congress to Support a Safer Future and Back H. Res. 317 to End the Threat of Nuclear Weapons May 8, 2025

At this time of crisis, now with an escalating conflict ongoing in the Kashmir region, involving India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed states, our work to advance a world without these weapons is more critical than ever. We know that even a limited nuclear war between India and Pakistan could kill up to a third of the world’s population.

Nuclear weapons are the greatest immediate threat to human health, safety, and survival. It’s time to stop accepting them as a permanent feature of our world. On April 10th, Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-02) introduced H. Res. 317, a necessary resolution that works toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

The resolution calls on the United States to lead global efforts in nuclear disarmament, adopt a no-first-use policy, protect impacted communities, end hair-trigger alert, and bring the world back from the brink of nuclear war. Last Congress, a similar resolution earned the support of 44 co-sponsors. We must build on that momentum and increase support in the 119th Congress.

This is a critical opportunity to raise awareness and push Congress to rethink outdated and dangerous nuclear policies. We need leaders in Washington who recognize that nuclear weapons do not make us safer.

PSR is dedicated to protecting human health from the dangers of nuclear war. As physicians and health professionals, we know that any use of nuclear weapons would result in catastrophic loss of life, long-term radiation impacts, and collapse of medical infrastructure. Preventing nuclear war is not just policy, it is a public health imperative.

Let your member of Congress know you support H. Res. 317 and a future free from the threat of nuclear weapons. Urge them to co-sponsor this vital resolution today.
