Tell Congress: Support Nuclear Arms Control and Prevent a New Arms Race April 8, 2025

The clock is ticking on nuclear arms control. In less than a year, the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) will expire, removing the last remaining cap on U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals. Without action, we face the risk of an unrestrained arms race, escalating global tensions, and increasing the likelihood of nuclear catastrophe. We must act now to prevent this dangerous future.

The United States and Russia currently adhere to limits set by New START, capping deployed strategic warheads at 1,550 each. However, with China expanding its nuclear arsenal and some in Congress pushing to grow the U.S. nuclear stockpile for the first time in decades, arms control efforts are under threat. Instead of fueling an arms race, the U.S. must lead the way in diplomatic solutions.

That’s why we need your help. A bipartisan resolution in Congress — H. Res. 100, introduced by Rep. Bill Foster, and S. Res. 61, introduced by Sens. Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley — calls on the administration to actively engage in nuclear diplomacy with Russia and commit to preventing an arms race. These resolutions urge the U.S. and Russia to respect New START limits until a successor agreement is in place, ensuring global stability and security.

PSR is committed to preventing nuclear war and protecting public health. As healthcare professionals, we know that nuclear weapons represent one of the greatest threats to human survival. Instead of increasing nuclear arsenals, we should be redirecting resources toward health, environmental protection, and global efforts for peace.

Join us in this month of action and send an email to your members of Congress urging them to co-sponsor and support these critical resolutions.
