Take action on a bipartisan effort to improve indoor air quality! September 3, 2024
A recently introduced bill in the House of Representatives seeks to codify the regulation of indoor air quality. On average, people spend 90% of their time indoors and EPA has found that poor indoor air quality is a major public health risk. Across the world, over 3 million premature deaths annually can be traced back to diseases caused by indoor air pollution.
Unfortunately, the Clean Air Act is only applicable to outdoor air pollution. The quality of our indoor air has received much less attention and funding as a result. It’s time for the United States to join other countries around the globe and regulate indoor air pollution. The bipartisan Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act would open up a path for regulation and funding that would protect the health of all Americans.
This bill is an effort to support EPA and its Indoor Environments Division by providing funding and other resources for regulation, technical assistance, and implementation. To begin, six of the most harmful indoor air pollutants, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde and radon, would be studied in order to enact health-protective standards. The bill would also establish scheduled assessments of indoor air quality in schools and childcare centers and allow EPA to help these facilities integrate best practices.
These policies are long overdue and could be life-saving. Reach out to your Representative today and urge them to support the Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act!
