Take Action: Cleaner cars save lives! January 12, 2026

The Trump administration recently proposed an illogical rollback of fuel economy standards for new cars. These standards have been regulated by the federal government since 1975 and were most recently updated in 2024. These fuel economy standards have incentivized auto makers to build cleaner, more efficient cars that are less likely to cause negative health impacts. Not to mention, they have been effective cost savers for drivers and have reduced emissions from the most polluting sector in the U.S.

Analyses have shown that this proposal would lead to over 450 premature deaths and nearly 14,000 asthma exacerbations over the next 25 years, plus more hospital visits at a time when the price of insurance and healthcare are skyrocketing. The carbon pollution expelled by vehicles is also worthy of concern for both our health and the climate. Keeping current fuel economy standards in place would prevent more than 700 million tons of this planet-warming pollution from being emitted.

It’s clear that this proposal is a handout to the fossil fuel industry and not in the interest of the general public. Submit your comment today and tell the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration how the health community really feels!
