Despite the many serious issues Congress could take on right now such as ending the war on Iran, lowering costs for millions of Americans, or protecting democracy, they’re more interested in undermining the Clean Air Act. The House is poised to vote on three bills this week that would risk the strides we’ve made to clean up our air and better health over the past several decades.
H.R.6387, the Fire Improvement and Reforming Exceptional Events Act
- The Clean Air Act allows air monitoring data to be excluded during “exceptional events.” This bill seeks to broaden the definition of such events, making emissions regulation more difficult.
H.R.6409, the Foreign Emissions and Nonattainment Clarification for Economic Stability Act
- Points the finger at foreign emissions that may or may not be worsening air quality rather than focusing on local polluters that are often most responsible for harming the health of nearby communities.
H.R.6398, the Reducing and Eliminating Duplicative Environmental Regulations Act
- Would lean into this administration’s trend of deregulation by easing permitting requirements and allowing Presidential exemptions for polluting facilities at the expense of health.
PSR and other leading national health and medical organizations opposed these bills — which are part of a 7 bill “Smoggy Skies” package — in committee last year. If passed, they would weaken critical clean air protections, putting the health of millions at risk from breathing in dirtier air.
These bills are framed as solutions that would cut red tape, but we know by now that this is never the full story. The real motivation is to give another handout to polluters with no consideration for our health or climate.
The House is voting on this package of bills this week! Don’t hesitate; send a message to your Representative today telling them to put health first and vote NO!
