Speak Out Against New Plutonium Pits April 28, 2026

On April 10th, the Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Survey (PEIS) from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) was released. This survey addresses the environmental impacts of the production of more plutonium pits for nuclear weapons at five sites across the country. This highly anticipated draft survey responds to a previous lawsuit that found the NNSA and Department of Energy (DOE) failed to address the environmental concerns of increased plutonium pit production.

This draft survey has now triggered a public comment process, meaning for the 90 days following its release on April 10th communities and concerned citizens can comment on the risks and harms of increased nuclear weapon pit production. This process takes place alongside five hearings taking place with opportunities for spoken comments in the coming weeks in South Carolina, Missouri, Livermore CA, New Mexico, and Washington DC.

This process gives health professionals an opportunity to not only speak out about the harms and risks related to nuclear weapons production that impact our communities, but also speak to the far reaching and potential harms of nuclear weapons and why our country cannot continue to produce or invest in these weapons of mass destruction.

More about the process and how you can get involved and submit a comment in the next 90 days can be found at pitpeis.com
