PSR Announces Goals to Advance Gender Equity in Our Nuclear Policy Work March 8, 2019

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Women have played a vital role in every social justice movement in the United States—and the movements to abolish nuclear weapons and address environmental hazards to health, including climate change, are certainly no exception. In our work toward a healthier, safer, more peaceful future, women are leaders, innovators, and key voices in the struggle to center and uplift our communities’ concerns and needs.

Physicians for Social Responsibility is committed to advancing justice, equity and inclusion, and to centering women’s voices and perspectives in our front-facing work—these efforts are at the heart of our goals and our mission.

As part of the groundbreaking Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy initiative, a crucial new leadership network that aims to break down gender barriers in nuclear policy—and in keeping with this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Balance for Better”—PSR is delighted to announce a set of organization goals and objectives to advance gender equity.

PSR affirms our commitment to:

  • Achieve gender balance on our Board of Directors by the end of this year.
  • Update our hiring policies and procedures this year to ensure that they promote gender equality.
  • Ensure gender balance in our efforts to recruit and mobilize health professionals to speak out on nuclear weapons issues.
  • Include questions related to gender diversity, equity, and inclusion as a part of our chapter annual reporting process, starting this year.
  • Ensure gender equity when recruiting speakers at any events that we organize or co-sponsor.

Thank you for all that you do.
