Protect our forests, no carbon dumping! December 13, 2023
This action alert is no longer active
Carbon capture and storage is a false solution proposed by the most-polluting industries. Widely deploying CCS means more pipelines, potential for life-threatening CO2 leaks, and a continued reliance on fossil fuels, exacerbating climate change.
Once carbon is captured, it needs to go somewhere. The United States Forest Service (USFS) has suggested our national forests and grasslands are the right places for injection into the earth. Not only is this dangerous for our environment, climate and health, but it stands in stark contrast to the USFS duty to protect our forests.
Luckily, the USFS is opening up the proposal for public comment, giving us an opportunity to rally against this desecration of public lands. Write your comment to the agency today!
Allowing CO2 injection in national forests sets a dangerous precedent that exempts an entire industry from responsibility and opens up the door for continued exploitation of our natural resources. We need to protect resources now more than ever as climate change worsens. CCS has negative climate impacts: It doesn’t capture even close to all the carbon that’s emitted, the pipelines and other infrastructure leak carbon back into the atmosphere, and it prolongs our reliance on fossil fuels. Public and environmental health depend on rejecting CCS and this proposal.
