In 2023, Physicians for Social Responsibility published a report documenting the use of PFAS in oil and gas drilling operations in New Mexico. However, the details of PFAS use remain hidden behind trade secret laws, and enforcement of regulatory protections is impossible due to the hazardous waste regulation exemptions enjoyed by the oil and gas industry.
