Ann Suellentrop then shared KC’s role in the legacy of nuclear violence. She showed us a map of the US and the 8 major sites where our nuclear weapons are developed and/or stored. The KC facility is right in the middle of the map and works closely with the other sites to build these “mass murder machines that are designed to burn down cities,” said Suellentrop, a leader in Physicians for Social Responsibility and PeaceWorks.
The Kansas City Plant at Bannister Federal Complex was operational from 1949 to 2014, established here probably because Truman was from this area, Suellentrop surmised. She said local employees work in close consort with the other plants, with the KC workers building the mechanical and electronic parts for the nuclear weapons’ guidance, containment, and explosion. “We are very productive,” she said, “producing over 110,000 parts per year.”
