New Report takes a deep dive into the companies responsible for prolonging the nuclear weapons threat October 22, 2021

The Center for International Policy released a report this month written by William Hartung, the Director of the Arms and Security Program at the center. This report looks at the Profiteers of Armageddon, the top contracting companies that stand to benefit heavily from modernizing the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal and destabilizing the international security environment.

In the report, Hartung calls out the top seven companies — Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Huntington Ingalls, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell and Bechtel — that have ensured they will continue to rake in billions of dollars while the rest of the world is forced to grapple with the existential threat of nuclear annihilation hanging over their heads. The nuclear weapons system runs like one big business, with these companies spending millions to lobby Congress to do what they want. This includes blocking efforts from organizations like PSR that have advocated for pausing the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) missile program meant to replace the aging Minuteman III missiles sitting in silos across the Midwest, or preventing the U.S. government from redeveloping nuclear sea-launched cruise missiles which were deemed deeply destabilizing and unnecessary by multiple U.S. presidents.

As Hartung argues, “It’s long past time that we stopped letting special interest lobbying and corporate profits stand in the way of a more sensible nuclear policy.” You can read the full report here, and you can access the summary in Inkstick Media here.
