With the 79th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings drawing near, PSR Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program invites you to participate in a communal remembrance of the attacks on August 6 and 9. To help you find one, intrepid Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program interns Michaela Soucy and Ethan Schmidt have been compiling a calendar of all the events we can find  being hosted by PSR chapters and allied organizations across the United States (in-person and virtual).

This year will see a wide variety of events; PSR Wisconsin’s Lanterns for Peace in Madison, WI, which features live music and floating lanterns in the Tenney Park Lagoon, the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance’s Rally for Abolition at the Alvin Bissell Park and March to the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Complex in Oak Ridge, TN, and in Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard Peace Council’s Edgartown Hiroshima Day Vigil at the Bend in the Road Beach featuring music, speeches, and prayer. This is just a sampling from over 50 events on the calendar.

Other events are taking place online, including the annual Cranes for Our Future campaign taking place on social media. Between August 6th and 9th, individuals will fold cranes as a symbol of hope and peace, and then share them on social media. You can find more information about the project, and participate here.

Find a commemoration near you and invite others to join.

Through these commemorations, we remember the atrocities at Hiroshima and Nagasaki that killed over 150,000 civilians, and the continuing harms of nuclear weapons which terrorize our world.

Hiroshima & Nagasaki, never again!
