Help PSR stop this new nuclear warhead September 19, 2018

This action alert is no longer active

During the 2016 Presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump reportedly asked this about nuclear weapons: “If we have them, why can’t we use them?”

For decades, PSR has called for a worldwide ban of nuclear weapons in order to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.

The solution is NOT to make nuclear weapons more usable. And yet, the Trump Administration wants to do just that. They want to fit new so-called “low yield” nuclear weapons onto submarine-launched missiles to provide a president with “new options.”

Don’t let the term “low yield” fool you. The proposed “low yield” bomb has been reported as 6.5 kilotons, or the equivalent of 6,500 tons of TNT.  Imagine the humanitarian catastrophe from an explosion roughly half the size of the one that leveled Hiroshima.

Fortunately, on Sept. 17, U.S. Representatives Ted Lieu (CA), Adam Smith (WA, Ranking Member of House Armed Services Committee), Earl Blumenauer (OR), and John Garamendi (CA) introduced H.R. 6840, the Hold the LYNE Act, which would prohibit funding, production, or deployment of any Low Yield Nuclear Explosive (LYNE). U.S. Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts introduced a companion bill, S. 3448, in the Senate. PSR has endorsed both bills.

Tell your US. Representative to cosponsor the Hold the LYNE Act.

From a public health perspective, the plan to build a “low-yield” nuclear weapon presents a dire threat to global health. It is designed to fight a “limited nuclear war” – that’s an oxymoron.  This weapon will lower the threshold for using nuclear warheads and raise the likelihood of a catastrophic nuclear war.

In a statement supporting this legislation, Former Secretary of Defense William Perry said, “These dangerous, unjustified, and redundant nuclear weapons are a gateway to a nuclear catastrophe.”

Please write today to ask your U.S. representative to cosponsor the Hold the LYNE Act.
