Los PFAS, que se encuentran en diversas operaciones industriales, tienen efectos perjudiciales para la salud humana y pueden contaminar los suministros de agua. El grupo Physicians for Social Responsibility publicó un informe afirmando que los PFAS podrían estar presentes en los fluidos utilizados en el fracking. El fracking, un proceso utilizado para extraer petróleo y gas natural de formaciones de esquisto, se ha utilizado intensivamente en la cuenca del Pérmico, en el sureste de Nuevo México.
