Gas exports paused, keep the pressure on! January 31, 2024

This action alert is no longer active

Last week the Biden Administration took unprecedented action to fight climate change by pausing development of new liquified natural gas (LNG) facilities. This is very good news!

For the first time, proposed LNG projects will be scrutinized based on their climate, economic, and national security impacts. We know the projects awaiting permits certainly ought to fail these tests, if only because their gas exports would have significant negative effects on  the climate.

If all 20 planned LNG export facilities were built, it would lead to new emissions every year equivalent to the entire annual emissions of the European Union. The emissions impact of all the LNG exports projects that are in operation, under construction, permitted or planned is the equivalent of 688 new coal-fired power plants.

Let’s tell the Biden Administration that pausing the permitting of new LNG export facilities is a great step in the right direction – but to keep our communities healthy and safe, we must phase out fossil fuels and pursue a just transition to renewable energy.

It’s time to stand up to the oil and gas industry and their health- and climate-damaging LNG exports. The health of our planet and our families should not be sacrificed for their profits. Join in by sending a message to Secretary Granholm at the Department of Energy. Double your impact by calling the White House at 202-456-1111!
