Nuclear War Prevention & Pizza Party
January 16 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EST
During the Reagan administration, the Nuclear Freeze movement, a grassroots movement of millions of Americans, successfully pressured our government to sign a treaty with the Soviet Union that led to the elimination of a whole class of nuclear armed missiles.
Subsequent treaties have led to a reduction in nuclear warheads between Russia and the U.S., and now, worldwide, the total is 12,100, 90% of which belong to Russia and the U.S.
But those 12,000 weapons still pose an intolerable risk to humanity. If the risk of a nuclear war each year were just 1%, then the probability of a nuclear war in the next 50 years would be 39%.
Join CPSR president, Dr. Gwen DuBois, in Annapolis next Thursday, January 16th from 10-12 to talk to your representatives in our state government about the urgent need to pass a Back from the Brink resolution about preventing nuclear war in Maryland. Then, hang out with us at a pizza party later in the day. (There will be doctors there, so it’s healthy!) We have an opportunity to help prevent nuclear war and make the world safer for our patients, families, and neighbors – starting right here in Maryland.
Local and state resolutions against nuclear weapons were a key part of building the pressure on the Reagan administration in the 80’s. The national Back from the Brink (BftB) coalition, which we’re proud to be a part of, has already passed over 80 BftB resolutions since 2017, including in Baltimore, Frederick, Chicago, Boston, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and 6 state legislative bodies. We can do this in Maryland.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done anything like this before – we’ll provide a quick training before meeting with the legislators.
