Doomsday Clock 2026: 85 Seconds to Midnight January 27, 2026
On January 27th, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced the 2026 time of their Doomsday Clock. It is now 85 seconds to midnight, four seconds closer than in 2025. Once again, this setting of the clock is the closest we’ve ever been to midnight. Over the past year, global tensions and risks have increased. The bulletin references the increasingly aggressive, adversarial, and nationalistic nature of global nuclear powers as reason to set the clock forward. Along with that, the undermining of norms for cooperation and structures of international law increasingly defy global peace and security.
With 85 seconds to midnight, now is the time for action. We cannot afford to continue down this path. Most importantly, today we recognize that this clock is movable. Civil society and PSR have the power to move this clock back, away from global humanitarian catastrophe. This year, the clock moved forward responding to a global failure in leadership. We must be that leadership to pursue peace and nuclear abolition.
