Denise Duffield, associate director of Physicians for Social Responsibility–Los Angeles criticized the ruling, saying it undermines long-standing commitments to a comprehensive cleanup of the site and limits meaningful public participation in decisions that affect community health.

“(The settlement agreement) was negotiated privately, without public input or representation of the community’s interests. It breaks prior promises for a safe and complete cleanup,” Duffield said.

She added that advocates remain concerned that the framework approved by the court allows large amounts of contamination to remain on site, despite decades of community advocacy for cleanup standards protective enough for residential habitation.
