It’s time to stop misdirecting hundreds of billions of dollars away from domestic and human needs to fund endless wars, dangerous and unneeded new nuclear weapons, and the Pentagon’s corporate handouts. Doing so will make our country stronger and more just. This summer, U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) introduced the People Over Pentagon Act, which calls for cutting $100 billion (about 12%) from the topline military budget.
Lee and Pocan are the Co-Chairs of the Defense Spending Reduction Caucus. So far, 18 Representatives have joined them to cosponsor H.R. 8040. PSR has endorsed the bill and is working with the People Over Pentagon coalition to garner additional cosponsors.
Upon introducing the bill, Rep. Lee said: “It is time that we realign our priorities to reflect the urgent needs of communities across this country that are healing from a pandemic, ongoing economic insecurity, and an international energy crisis — none of which will be resolved through greater military spending. Taking this step to downsize our military budget by $100 billion will ensure that our national security truly centers on the American people, not weapons industry profits.” Rep. Pocan said: “The amount of money the defense industry convinces Congress to spend each year doesn’t protect us from real threats like climate change, pandemics, or cyber-attacks. It only lines contractors’ pockets.”
