Act now to protect organizations from politicized attacks! November 19, 2024
This action alert is no longer active
Congress is back to work and the House of Representatives will be voting soon on a dangerous bill that could harm organizations like PSR: H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act.
This bill would unduly increase executive power and endanger nonprofit civil society groups, universities, faith communities, and health organizations. This would have lasting consequences on our civic health, as it is likely to be enforced by the Secretary of Treasury in a biased and politicized manner. If passed, organizations could be labeled as “supporting terrorism” by the Secretary of Treasury without cause, stripped of their tax exempt status, and could have trouble seeking proper recourse in court to regain that status.
An administration hostile to any given issue, including climate change, nuclear weapons abolition, environmental and social justice, or health advocacy, could use the language included in H.R. 9495 to attack and ostracize their opposition with the label of terrorism, all without providing material evidence to support the claim.
We cannot allow the executive branch to single-handedly quiet dissent through this law. The vote on H.R. 9495 could be scheduled for as early as Wednesday morning, so contact your Representative now!
