A Message from Our Executive Director January 23, 2023

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) today announced that Jeff Carter, who has led the organization as its Executive Director since 2017, will step down later this year. In a message to members sent this morning, he said:

I am writing to share the news that I will be stepping down as PSR’s Executive Director on March 24.

It has been an honor and a privilege to lead this historic organization over the last six years. I’m especially grateful to have had the opportunity to put together an outstanding team here at PSR’s national office. Together, we’ve accomplished a lot: significantly grown our funding support, brought in some amazing new talent, and launched exciting new campaigns and initiatives—much of it in partnership with our chapters.

I’m particularly proud to have provided opportunities for a new generation of health professionals to create and lead our newest initiatives, and for our efforts to renew and reinvigorate PSR’s historic commitment to ground our work in the struggle to achieve racial and economic justice.

It’s really hard to leave when so much of this is just getting started. At the same time, because the organization is so strong in terms of its terrific staff, Board, effectiveness and fiscal health, I think it’s the right moment for a new leader to come in and expand upon what we have set in motion.

PSR has been a leader in the effort to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons for more than 60 years, and the preeminent health voice on climate change and environmental degradation for almost as long. It’s humbling to realize that many of you reading this have been working on these issues for decades. I’m grateful to all of you for your efforts, and for providing me with the opportunity to be a small part of this legacy.

I also want to thank the leaders on our Board of Directors for their support over these last six years. The Board has assembled a transition team and will announce plans for its search process in the very near future.
